Geoffrey Hinton, a prominent figure in artificial intelligence, has raised concerns about the potential risks of AI surpassing human intelligence without proper controls, warning of a scenario that could lead to human extinction. To address this, Hinton, a co-recipient of the 2024 Nobel Prize in physics and co-founder of the AI Safety Foundation, proposes training AI to develop maternal instincts as a safeguard for humanity.
In an interview with IDEAS host Nahlah Ayed, Hinton highlighted various short-term risks associated with AI, such as the misuse of AI by terrorists to create harmful viruses and the manipulation of democracy through fake videos. However, his primary concern lies in the long-term risk of AI surpassing human intelligence, raising uncertainties about coexistence and the potential for AI dominance.
When asked about the likelihood of AI causing human extinction within this century, Hinton emphasized the unpredictable nature of technological advancements, pointing out the rapid progress in AI capabilities over the past decade. While acknowledging the possibility of AI posing an existential threat to humanity, he stressed the need for proactive research and efforts to ensure AI prioritizes human well-being.
Hinton proposed a paradigm shift in AI development, advocating for imbuing AI with caring instincts akin to maternal instincts seen in human relationships. He emphasized the importance of fostering AI systems that prioritize human interests over their own, emphasizing the potential benefits of aligning AI goals with human welfare.
Reflecting on the evolution of AI research, Hinton noted that historically, the focus has been on creating intelligent assistants rather than compassionate entities. However, he underscored the necessity of reevaluating this approach as AI advances in intelligence, suggesting a fundamental reorientation towards AI as a caretaker rather than a subordinate tool.
Despite the challenges and uncertainties surrounding AI development, Hinton stressed the importance of striving to instill AI with altruistic tendencies towards humanity. He acknowledged the relatively small percentage of researchers currently focusing on this aspect of AI development, emphasizing the critical need for greater attention and efforts to shape a future where AI acts in the best interests of humanity.
