“Tanzania Pursues Opposition Figures Linked to Election Violence”

Date:

Tanzania is moving to apprehend senior opposition figures believed to be responsible for the violent demonstrations that occurred across the nation in the wake of the recent presidential and parliamentary elections.

Chadema, the leading opposition party, and various human rights advocates allege that over 1,000 individuals were killed by security forces during the unrest. The government has refuted these claims as exaggerated, refraining from disclosing its own casualty figures.

Law enforcement officials have identified 10 individuals as persons of interest in connection with the investigations into the disturbances. Additionally, 145 individuals have been charged with treason by prosecutors.

A police spokesperson stated that a concerted effort, involving multiple defense and security agencies, is underway to locate and apprehend all those involved in planning and executing the violent acts.

Among those being sought for arrest are key figures from Chadema, including the party’s secretary general, John Mnyika, deputy Amaan Golugwa, and communication head Brenda Rupia. Chadema representatives were not immediately available for comment on the police statement.

The protests, largely triggered by the exclusion of Chadema’s leader Tundu Lissu from the ballot, erupted following the electoral commission’s declaration of President Samia Suluhu Hassan as the winner with nearly 98% of the vote. President Hassan was inaugurated on Monday.

African Union observers have cast doubt on the credibility of the election, citing instances of ballot box tampering. In contrast, the government maintains that the election process was fair despite criticism.

According to police reports released on Saturday, violent demonstrations occurred in various cities and regions, resulting in injuries and substantial damage to both public and private properties, including bank facilities and government offices.
