NDP leadership hopeful Avi Lewis raised concerns over Canada’s continual increase in fossil fuel production, likening it to an “addiction” during a recent panel discussion. Lewis emphasized the need for clear policies that set the federal NDP apart from the Liberals, asserting his opposition to expanding natural gas, oil, and coal operations in the country. He stressed the importance of the party being able to disagree with provincial counterparts, advocating for a shift towards sustainable energy sources.
Highlighting the detrimental impact of fossil fuels on climate change, Lewis cited statistics indicating that coal, oil, and gas contribute significantly to global greenhouse gas emissions. He underscored the necessity for transitioning to “safe forms” of energy production aligned with 21st-century standards, criticizing the reliance on fossil fuels driven by financial interests.
While fellow candidate Heather McPherson did not challenge Lewis on stage, she downplayed his stance as nothing new, noting that the NDP has long held similar positions. The party’s policy book from 2021 does not explicitly address limiting fossil fuel expansion but does commit to ending government subsidies in the sector. Previous party leaders, such as Thomas Mulcair and Jagmeet Singh, faced challenges in effectively communicating the NDP’s stance on fossil fuel production.
The differing views within the NDP were evident as the candidates discussed their strategies for the economy and environmental sustainability. McPherson outlined plans to create employment opportunities for youth in various sectors, including green jobs, while also advocating for initiatives like high-speed rail and a clean energy corridor. Rob Ashton emphasized the importance of renewable energy, specifically domestic production of wind turbines to create unionized employment opportunities.
Ashton emphasized the need for a balanced approach that considers the economic impact of transitioning away from fossil fuels while ensuring environmental protection and Indigenous rights. He stressed the importance of creating well-paying union jobs in the green economy to garner support for the shift away from traditional energy sources. The candidates participated in a panel at the Mouseland Gala, offering their visions for the future of the NDP and Canada’s energy landscape.
