“TV Show Mention Drives Surge in Interest at UNESCO Site”

Date:

A UNESCO World Heritage Site in Alberta is experiencing increased interest following a mention on a popular American TV show, with hopes for a busy summer season. The Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump was featured in an episode of the Golden Globe-winning medical drama series, “The Pitt.” The character Dr. Michael, portrayed by Noah Wyle, expressed his desire to visit the landmark located in the foothills of the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

Situated approximately 150 kilometers south of Calgary, the Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump was historically used by Indigenous communities to guide bison herds over an 11-meter cliff for hunting purposes. The site features an interpretive center integrated into the sandstone cliff, showcasing Blackfoot culture, local ecology, and archaeological discoveries, leading visitors to a cliff top trail.

Quinton Crow Shoe, the marketing lead at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, mentioned that the TV show’s mention has sparked curiosity among visitors, prompting them to explore the off-the-beaten-path destination. Following the show’s reference, there has been a surge in social media engagement and inquiries, indicating a heightened awareness and interest in the site.

Designated as a World Heritage Site in 1981, Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump typically attracts around 60,000 visitors annually. Crow Shoe anticipates that the recent uptick in interest will translate into increased foot traffic and tour bookings during the peak season from May to September. Additionally, promotional efforts, including discounts offered through the national Canada Strong Pass, have positively impacted visitor numbers.

Crow Shoe highlighted the appeal of Head-Smashed-In as part of a network of attractions in southern Alberta, encouraging visitors to explore the diverse offerings in the region, from Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park to Waterton Lakes National Park. Collaborative efforts among attractions aim to bolster tourism and mutual support within the area.

The Alberta Culture Minister, Tanya Fir, shared the TV clip on social media, emphasizing the significance of Alberta’s historical and cultural landmarks in capturing global attention. Travel Alberta also leveraged the TV show’s mention by releasing a promotional video featuring the characters against the backdrop of Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump’s cliffs.

The positive response to the TV show’s reference underscores the enduring appeal of Alberta’s rich heritage and natural wonders, resonating with audiences worldwide.
