In Bienfait, Sask., Angie Tuffnell faced a harrowing encounter with a starving moose in extreme cold conditions. The moose, seeking warmth near her house, suddenly turned aggressive, attacking Angie. Her son, Shawn Tuffnell, intervened by physically confronting the moose, resorting to punching and striking it with a shovel to protect his mother.
A tense struggle ensued as Shawn bravely wrestled the moose, eventually resorting to shooting the animal with a .22-calibre rifle to neutralize the threat. Despite multiple gunshot wounds, including a fatal shot to the head, the moose continued its aggressive behavior until Shawn managed to bring it down.
A post-mortem examination confirmed the moose’s weakened state due to starvation, with no signs of diseases like rabies or chronic wasting. According to experts, extreme cold conditions can drive moose to seek warmth in unexpected places, leading to unpredictable behavior, as seen in this alarming incident.
The incident has left the Tuffnell family with physical and emotional scars, with Angie recovering from a leg injury and Shawn sustaining minor injuries during the life-threatening encounter. While regretful about having to take the moose’s life, Shawn acknowledges that their actions were necessary to ensure their survival in the face of imminent danger.
