The B.C. Lions have turned their season around with a six-game winning streak, securing second place in the West Division after a 27-21 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders. This win advanced the Lions to an 11-7 record, setting up a West semifinal matchup against the Calgary Stampeders on Nov. 1 in Vancouver.
Meanwhile, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, finishing fourth in the West at 10-8, will cross over to face the Montreal Alouettes in the East Division semifinal on the same day.
Initially struggling with a 1-3 start and a 3-5 record by July, the Lions rallied in the second half of the season, going 8-2 to secure their playoff spot. Quarterback Nathan Rourke attributed their early struggles to self-inflicted errors but emphasized the team’s belief in themselves and the need for execution.
Despite overcoming an 18-10 deficit, a controversial play in the third quarter altered the game’s momentum. A ruling from the CFL Command Centre nullified a potential touchdown for Saskatchewan, leading to a pivotal sequence that favored the Lions.
Reflecting on the play, Saskatchewan’s Tevaughn Campbell disputed hearing a whistle and acknowledged the significant impact on the game’s outcome. Lions defender Mathieu Betts acknowledged the fortunate turn of events but highlighted the team’s ability to capitalize on the opportunity.
In the fourth quarter, Rourke orchestrated a crucial scoring drive, capped off by a touchdown pass to Keon Hatcher, securing a 27-21 lead. Although Rourke fell short of surpassing the league’s passing yardage leader, he remained focused on the team’s goal of winning the Grey Cup.
As the Riders prepare to host the West final on Nov. 8, receiver Kian Schaffer-Baker emphasized the importance of maintaining their approach heading into the postseason. The game saw notable performances from Ayden Eberhardt and Sean Whyte for the Lions, while Jack Coan and Michael Hughes made significant contributions for the Riders.
