Alberta government workers are set to resume full-time in-office work starting February, announced the province on Friday. Since March 2022, Alberta Public Service (APS) staff have had the option to work remotely for up to two days per week as part of the interim hybrid work policy. About 44% of the workforce, totaling nearly 12,600 government employees, had been participating as of August.
The decision to end the hybrid work policy was attributed to evolving circumstances and industry trends, according to the province’s news release. Citing a similar move made by the Ontario government in August, where employees are now required to work in-office five days a week as of January 5, 2026.
The Alberta Public Service assured its commitment to flexibility through other available policies based on operational needs, such as flexible work hours and modified schedules. The Finance Minister’s office, responsible for overseeing public employees, expressed support for the full-time office return, anticipating improved collaboration, accountability, and service for Albertans.
While recognizing the importance of individual flexibility based on job requirements and circumstances, the Opposition NDP Leader questioned the government’s approach. Despite concerns, businesses in downtown Edmonton, where many government offices are situated, welcomed the news. They have been struggling due to reduced foot traffic since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.
Quinn Phillips, from the Edmonton Downtown Business Association, acknowledged that workers may not be thrilled about the shift to full-time office work but highlighted the positive impact on local businesses. Having more people in the downtown core during daytime hours is expected to provide valuable support and enhance the vibrancy of the area.
