A streetwear company based in Montreal has been recognized for supplying the original white fleece jacket which was customized to create a popular jacket featured in the show “Heated Rivalry.” Yaniv Abecassis, the CEO and founder of Kuwalla Tee, shared how their jacket gained attention across Canada after appearing in the second episode of the series. Despite this, Kuwalla Tee did not receive any acknowledgment for their contribution.
The modified version of the jacket showcased notable changes such as the addition of “Canada” in red lettering on the back, red accents on the collar and zipper pulls, and maple leaves on the arms. It was crafted by Canadian costume designer Hanna Puley to offer a comfortable and simplistic design.
In the series, character Shane Hollander, portrayed by Canadian actor Hudson Williams, dons the zip-up jacket during scenes set at the Sochi Olympics. Fans of the show expressed interest in purchasing the jacket, even though it is not official Team Canada merchandise. Williams even presented a similar fleece to Prime Minister Mark Carney at an event in Ottawa.
To meet the demand for the fleece, the show’s creators partnered with a Canadian apparel company called Province of Canada. However, Kuwalla Tee raised concerns about their fleece being utilized to promote the new product without receiving proper credit. Following discussions with CBC News, steps were taken to ensure recognition for Kuwalla Tee.
Abecassis mentioned that Kuwalla Tee initially contacted the show’s producers and Province of Canada to seek acknowledgment on social media. The issue arose when the fleece was being monetized without attributing credit to Kuwalla Tee, prompting the company to voice their concerns publicly.
After negotiations, an agreement was reached where Kuwalla Tee was tagged and credited by “Heated Rivalry” TV and Province of Canada in relevant posts, providing the Montreal-based company with the deserved recognition. Despite legal perspectives suggesting limited grounds for action, the resolution signifies a positive outcome for all parties involved.
