“Anne of Green Gables Doll Resurfaces as Cherished Artwork”

Date:

A doll resembling the character Anne of Green Gables has caused a stir on social media, with some nicknaming it “Anne of Scream Gables.” Initially mocked on Facebook, it was spotted in a Cape Breton thrift store. However, a Nova Scotia man, Andrew Danylewich, revealed that the doll is actually a cherished artwork created by his late mother, Heather Danylewich.

Heather, an artist known for her fabric sculptures, crafted the Anne Shirley piece about 40 years ago. Andrew, who runs ADJA Studio and Gallery in Liverpool, N.S., shared that his mother specialized in creating larger-than-life fabric murals and sculptures. One of her notable works was a giant wampum bird displayed at the Royal Canadian Mint.

The doll found at the thrift store is believed to be a commemorative piece for the 75th anniversary of the novel “Anne of Green Gables.” Heather’s fabric sculptures are rare, with only a few surviving pieces known to exist, such as soft sculptures of prime ministers housed at Library and Archives Canada.

Despite the doll receiving light-hearted teasing online, Andrew remains endeared to it, recognizing his mother’s signature smile in the creation. While the doll is no longer at the thrift store, Andrew hopes to locate it and display it at his gallery. If not, he wishes for it to be appreciated by its current owner.

The story of the Anne of Green Gables doll has sparked interest and nostalgia, shedding light on the talented artist behind its creation.
