“Surprise in Annapolis Royal Gardens: Ginkgo Tree Revealed as Female”

Date:

In Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens, a surprising discovery was made about a ginkgo tree that had been thought to be male for four decades. The tree turned out to be female, as evidenced by the unexpected presence of foul-smelling fruit-like seeds this year. These seeds emit a pungent odor when crushed underfoot, resembling scents like dog waste or rancid butter.

Initially dismissing the suggestion that the seeds were from the ginkgo tree due to its supposed male nature, staff members, including the gardens’ horticulturalist, eventually confirmed its female identity upon closer inspection. It was also revealed that ginkgo trees can take several decades to reach full maturity.

Horticulturist Ashlea Viola expressed surprise at the discovery, noting that mistaken plantings of female ginkgo trees are not uncommon. Ginkgos are favored for their vibrant leaves that transition from green to bright yellow in autumn, creating a colorful carpet when they all fall simultaneously.

Despite the tree’s smelly seeds, its resilience and historical significance as a “living fossil” make it a valued addition to the historic gardens. There are no plans to remove the female tree, with visitors being advised to expect the distinctive scent during certain times of the year. The ginkgo tree’s unique beauty and enduring nature continue to captivate both staff and visitors alike.
