“3D-Printed Stand Saves Kitten with Rare Condition”

Date:

A couple in Kamloops, British Columbia, utilized 3D printing technology to create a feeding stand for a foster kitten with a unique medical condition. Piglet, the five-month-old kitten under the care of Angela and Jason Lyall, struggled to eat properly since she was two days old, remaining small and undernourished compared to her littermates. Initially considered for euthanasia due to pneumonia, Piglet was diagnosed with megaesophagus, a condition affecting the food passage to her stomach, posing risks of regurgitation and inhalation into her lungs.

To address Piglet’s feeding challenges, the Lyalls designed a vertical feeding stand using a freely available online template, tailored to accommodate her condition. The stand proved transformative, enabling Piglet to consume food effectively and gain weight, visibly improving her health and appearance. A video showcasing Piglet’s feeding stand went viral on social media, garnering widespread attention and raising awareness about megaesophagus in cats, a relatively uncommon condition compared to dogs, who can utilize specialized equipment like Bailey chairs for assistance.

The adaptable nature of the vertical feeding stand allows the Lyalls to adjust it as Piglet grows. Angela highlighted the intensive care Piglet requires, including five feedings daily and post-meal upright positioning for 15 minutes, emphasizing the family’s unwavering dedication to her well-being. Despite facing uncertainties about Piglet’s survival, Angela expressed gratitude for her progress and resilience, underscoring the joy of witnessing her flourishing health and the value of her presence in their lives.
